The Penitentiary Center of Las Palmas I wins the IIPP Theater Contest

The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions (IIPP) has awarded the Penitentiary Center of Las Palmas I the National Prize for Theater in penitentiary centers in the 2020 edition.

The work presented by the Canarian prison is entitled ‘To the limit’. It is a choral work in which ten inmates explore and expose their limitations, strengths and desires through monologues. With a precise rhythm and careful choreography, they make this piece a poetic act.

This work is the fruit of the Social Theater workshop carried out by the Hestia Association in the Las Palmas I prison. With this activity, in which more than 50 inmates have participated throughout 2019 and 2020, it is about creating a space where inmates can become aware of themselves and others, develop personal skills, as well as identify and express emotions. The group of inmates worked on the limit concept, understood from the geographical to the emotional, personal and collective. All this process was reflected in a collectively constructed play.

The creation was represented in three functions at the Las Palmas I Penitentiary Center during the month of February 2020 before an audience of 100 external spectators and another 300 inmates. It was also chosen to be programmed within the theatrical season of the Sala Insular de Teatro del Cabildo de Gran Canaria. However, “To the limit” is pending to be exhibited because of COVID-19 until the sanitary measures make the event possible.
