KONTAN.CO.ID – A number of interesting astronomical phenomena will occur in June 2021. One of them: the peak of the Arietid meteor shower which will occur on 7 June.
From the observations of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (Lapan), the Arietid meteor shower has been active from May 14 to June 24.
Head of the Dissemination Division of the Lapan Space Science Center, Emanuel Sungging, said the phenomenon of the peak of the meteor shower could be observed from the territory of Indonesia.
For the best time to observe meteor showers, it is usually in the early hours of the morning. “Meteor showers can be observed from the territory of Indonesia, usually in the early morning,” Sungging said Kompas.com, Wednesday (2/6).
According to him, the public can observe this phenomenon using the naked eye, without the need for a telescope. “The important thing is dark without light pollution,” he said.

Meteor shower peak
The Arietid meteor shower is a meteor shower whose radian point or the starting point of the meteor’s appearance is located in the constellation Aries, precisely near the star Botein (Delta Arietis).
This phenomenon has been active since May 14, and will continue until June 24. The peak of the Arietid meteor shower will occur on June 7 with an intensity of 50 meteors per hour at the zenith.
For the territory of Indonesia, the intensity is reduced to 19-20 meteors per hour.
The Arietid meteor shower is thought to have originated from the dust remnants of the asteroid Icarus and the periodic comet 96P/Machholz. However, Lapan said, the main source of the meteor shower is still not known with certainty.
Meteor showers are meteors that fall and pass through the Earth’s surface in large numbers. So, from the surface of the Earth it will look like rain.
