The pay gap between men and women is narrowing

On average, the pay gap between men and women is still 5 percent. Ten years ago, that difference was almost 10 percent. This is evident from figures from the Belgian statistical office Statbel. Our country is doing better than most other European countries.

Only in Luxembourg (-0.2 percent), Romania (3.6 percent), Slovenia (3.8 percent) and Poland (4.5 percent) is the pay gap smaller or even non-existent. Countries with the largest gap are Estonia (20.5 percent), Austria (18.8 percent) and Germany (17.6 percent).

France (15.4 percent) and the Netherlands (13.5 percent) are also doing a lot worse than our country. Belgium also scores much better than the average in Europe, because women in the EU earn on average almost 13 percent less than men.
