The patient / user experience at the heart of health democracy!

Nathalie Bessis-Levy – Senior Manager, WELIOM, MONDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2022

Health democracy: this is the idea that reflections on the development and implementation of health policy must involve all actors in the health system. Discussions on this issue cannot be collected by a limited number of people and above all they cannot exclude the main stakeholders: patients or users.

Patient Experience: A Lever

The notion of the patient’s experience goes beyond simply considering the patient’s words. By adopting this approach, we understand that taking into account the patient’s perspective is worth gold and that it is the best lever to bridge the gap between expectations and health services: who can better than the patient? , talk about the health path that he has just experienced? Who can, better than the patient, describe what he felt, what he would have liked…? In short, the patient’s experience aims to take into account the person as a whole, together with her and what he feels, and not just his state of health or his social situation.

New technologies at the service of the patient experience

The transformation of the healthcare system must also be guided by the patient, by his experience. To transform, you have to start with the expectations and frustrations of the person as a whole. In addition to an open mind and new ways of exercising care, tools are needed and, in this, new technologies are an opportunity. The patient’s experience induces a collection of the patient’s or companion’s words: online questionnaires, recording of expectations in a DPI / DUI, FALC technologies for less verbal people, tool for the continuous collection of the patient’s experience, patient portal …. It also assumes that professionals have complete information: the DPI / DUI allows to trace the person’s medical history, his choices or even his desires, connected objects, facilitating constant monitoring, remote monitoring, etc. Once you’ve picked it out, it needs to be able to prioritize and plan the actions you want to accomplish, particularly with project management tools.

The health sector is tired. To alleviate it you need to make the right diagnosis and provide the right remedies: the patient and his experience are the experts on these topics and new technologies are the best tool!
