KONTAN.CO.ID – MOSCOW. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (22/10/2020) said the era when the United States and Russia became the most important countries in the world is in the past. According to him, China and Germany are now heading for the status of superpowers (superpowers).

Launch Reuters, Putin said that currently the role of the United States has diminished, as has the role of Britain and France. In contrast, the roles of Beijing and Berlin – in terms of political and economic weight – are on the way to superpower status.

“If Washington is not ready to discuss global issues with Moscow, Russia is ready to discuss with other countries,” said Putin, speaking via video link.

He said Washington could no longer claim exceptionalism and question why they wanted it. Information only, exceptionalism is the view that a country, society, institution, movement, or era is “exceptional” (unusual or great).

Reuters said, ahead of the US presidential election on November 3, Putin said he hoped the new government would be ready for dialogue on security and control of nuclear weapons.

As is well known, Washington last week rejected Russia’s proposal for an unconditional one-year extension of the latest agreement limiting the deployment of US and Russian strategic nuclear weapons, calling the proposal “not the beginning.”

The New START Agreement (Strategic Arms Reduction Agreement), signed in 2010 will expire in February. The deal limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads Russia and the United States can deploy and the missiles and bombers that carry them.

Despite their differences, Moscow and Washington appear increasingly close to a deal on New START.
