The approximately 900 people hired to reduce the crisis do not seem to be enough to alleviate the workload in Service Canada offices, nor to allay the frustration and anxiety of travellers.
The dissatisfaction of the hundreds of people in front of the Laval passport office made many react.
“It didn’t take a crystal ball to know that when the sanitary measures were lifted, […] Quebecers were going to want to go on a trip,” said Alexandre Boulerice, MP for Rosemont—La-Petite-Patrie and deputy leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP).
“We have a kind of bottleneck and we have completely absurd situations. The offices of deputies are overwhelmed with calls from people who only want to shout their frustration, ”he continues.
He regrets that the situation provokes altercations and denounces the inaction of the federal government.
“We ask the minister questions, it is never clear. She tells us that it will be settled soon, that we hire people, we don’t know who, we don’t know where.
“However, the federal public service is a huge machine, there are tens of thousands of people, there is no way to reassign people urgently to deal with this file as quickly as possible?”, asks Mr. Boulerice.
“It is a great incompetence of Minister Karina Gould. One wonders where they are these 600-900 people that it employed, because there is nothing which is regulated. It gets worse every day,” he concludes.
