The Passion of Second-Hand Dealers: Antiques with a Soul and Bargain Hunting in Amboise

“What we like is to find the object. » Yves Bazenant, head of Belle Lurette, is always enthusiastically infectious when we ask him what makes second-hand dealers run. With Laurent Karsenti (Les Années Folles) and Fabienne Carré (Au Paravent), he is one of three professionals based in Amboise, always ready to open their Ali Baba cave to bargain hunters of all kinds. Meet these enthusiasts of “antiques” and others “things that have a soul”faithful to the role in the face of the Internet steamroller.

“Antiques, in good condition, at reasonable prices”

At the foot of the church of Saint-Denis, Laurent Karsenti opened Les Années Folles about twenty years ago, after the first life as a disc jockey. “I’ve always been passionate about castles and what we find inside them. I’ve always liked antiques”explains the one who made people dance “thousands of people” at Scoop in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the middle of a flea market “a bit old fashioned”he gives his perspective on the call: “Offer antiques, in good condition, at the right price. » But what is also important, for the man in the hat, is communication. “I’m bound to trade, to meetings. Relationships are essential. »

It is this lack of direct communication that he criticizes – among others – with the online sales sites that have shaken up the world of second-hand goods in recent years. “The requests put the profession at risk because they also circulate false information about prices, which worries everyone. »

“The work is much more difficult than before. Covid has changed things a lot: people have put themselves on the Internet, so they have auction rooms”, agrees Fabienne Carré. In Amboise since 2018, she opened Au Paravent in the old Gounin center building, place des Tanneurs. For them, the passion for things has become a profession. “The flea market is quickly addictive. Once you start hunting, you can’t stop. Wherever I go, I know I’ll stop as soon as I come across a flea market.”laughed the shopkeeper, still looking “things that live”.

“The rare thing can be nothing”

“This rarity may as well be nothing. The value does not necessarily translate into euros”, specifies Yves Bazenant. The head of Belle Lurette, which recently celebrated 21 years of activity on the Route de Tours, also notes that “The way people eat has changed: when you drive a little, you notice that there are fewer and fewer stores”.

But run a shop, “stage materials for the promotion”, still for him, as for his two friends, a pleasure. Despite the time and the changing times. “Joy is happiness! »
