After a career in teaching, media and communication, Laurence Lucas was told, when she had just turned 46 and did not feel comfortable in her new job, that at his age “it’s too late to move”. She then decided to create The smugglers.
Restore reality
“The place of senior women in the world of work is a current issue; a societal problem that requires us to rethink this period of life and the way of considering people who are part of this age group in society. The way we conceive the evolution of women’s careers is infamous, even absurd: at the beginning we are too young, then there is this very small window during which we generally have our children then, at 45: we is too old! It’s unfair, especially since these women, who are told that they are obsolete, carry a lot of people, from the youngest to the oldest. There is no match between the image that is projected onto these women and their real contribution to society. On the other hand, age is equated with a loss, never with a gain in experiences. However, after the age of 40, we have more perspective on our ambitions. We are more looking for a balance in life, an interesting job. Our career ambition gives way to the desire to help other people grow: hence the idea of creating Les Passeuses…
25 portraits of women
“The first women who testified have interesting lives and are doing things that I find incredible. I also wanted to give voice to women in whom we can project ourselves. Say to yourself: “Hey, this woman has done incredible things. His life is similar to mine. So I too can do it and make my contribution. » I think of Farida. Coming from a family of emigrants, who joined TF1 after studying computer science and who resumed studies in HR. Then I started getting approached. For example, the editor of Céline Alix – the author of Thanks but no thanks, a book where she explains how women redefine ambition – contacted me to organize a meeting. I wanted all types of profiles, like Aïnat who, locked up by her mother, did not go to school until she ended up escaping and being taken into shelters. Despite this, she is a hyperbalanced, intelligent and very cheerful girl. Today, she is both a scriptwriter and a childminder and has a distanced view of her profession and her childhood. She succeeded in her life in the sense of accomplishment, not in the social sense. This is what was important to me to show.
Les Passeuses tomorrow
I really enjoyed making these portraits. Today I want to address issues related to women by calling on experts. I am thinking of subjects such as the question of caregivers, that of wealth management, the education of children, accommodation and housing for seniors, but also physical appearance… To explore these issues from the age we are in, and to provide insight. I would like to re-enchant that age.
Telling women that they don’t have to apologize for being the age they are!
