A 33-year-old passenger from Hamburg was thrown off the plane during a stopover because he smoked on the plane. He was not allowed to continue flying with his family and now he has to pay a fine.

Shortly after the car took off in Hamburg, the man locked himself in the on-board toilet to smoke a cigarette, according to the federal police. Even when the crew noticed him and asked him to leave the bathroom, the 33-year-old was still smoking. Bad luck for him: the plane to Antalya made an unscheduled stop in Hanover to pick up passengers from another defective machine.

During the stopover, the man was excluded from the flight by the pilot and escorted overboard by the federal police. For a cigarette on an airplane, the Federal Aviation Authority usually imposes a fine of 250 to 350 euros, plus a tax of 28.50 euros. The maximum rate for smoking on an airplane is even 1,000 euros.

The other family members of the 33-year-old then flew to Turkey. He himself, however, had to take the train from Hanover back to Hamburg.
