The parking lot was left under the sea in Helsinki – The city was dying –

The traffic sign in front of the Verkkosaari marina defines the beach area as a parking area, which is prone to being submerged under water.

The parking lot in Helsinki‘s Kalasatama was under sea water.

The parking lot is located next to the Verkkosaari marina. The traffic sign marking the parking area is close to the shoreline at almost sea level, so when the water level rises in Vanhankaupunkinselkä, the water rises even a little bit to cover the parking area.

The picture for this story was taken on Thursday, October 24. The water level has dropped slightly since the previous day, when sea water covered an even larger area.

The rising sea water did not surprise car owners. On Thursday morning, there was not a single car in the parking lot. Instead, the customers of the marina went about their business in the rising sea water next to the area.

A mystery place

As an interesting detail, in the image taken by Google Maps in July of last year, there is no parking space in the area at all. By contacting Iltalehti, the supervisor of the Helsinki city parking control Kaija Kossila is not aware of the parking area in question.

– I don’t know this place. This requires a bit of clarification, says Kossila.

It is probably one of the many temporary parking lots in the Verkkosaari area. The area will be completely flooded in the coming years, when the construction phase of Kalasatama, which was built from scratch, moves further north. Construction work will continue until the 2040s.
