The Pararjode sleigh rider broke a foot bone during training on the Igls track

The sledge driver Kendija Aparjode has had a break in the training and is already on her way to Latvia to perform in-depth inspections, Kristaps Mauriņš, the manager of the Latvian sledge team, told the news agency LETA.

It is not yet known how long Aparjode could fall out of the competition, says Mauriņš.

Aparjode was injured in one of the training runs on the Eggs track in Austria after failing to pass the ninth turn, which will prevent him from starting the fifth stage of the World Cup on Sunday.

“In the straight line from the ninth to the tenth turn, the tractor makes ice and, in our opinion, the place where the tractor stops and moves the ice cutter, which makes ice, had developed like a groove,” Mauriņš mentioned the possible reason for the injury. “It was unfortunate that the young duo Eduards Ševics-Mikelševics / Lucas Krast and the next day Candy did not drive well on the ninth turn, made a mistake and hit the foot right there.”

The Latvian athlete was immediately examined for an X-ray, which revealed a fracture of the foot.

“An X-ray was taken yesterday, there is a bone fracture in the foot, now she is already flying home. On Monday, I will immediately go to the doctors of the Latvian Olympic team to perform examinations, and then there will be some clarity about what will happen next. It is clear that there is a fracture, but then we will know more precisely how long she will be out of circulation, ”explains Mauriņš.

Shevic-Mikelchevich / Krast, a junior duo, was also initially entered in the National Cup doubles competition on Friday, but shortly before the competition they were no longer on the start list, and later it became known that one of the athletes was injured during the training session.

“Juniors may not have such a severe fracture, judging by X-rays, but we really hope that they will be able to return to the main junior competitions in the second half of the season,” says Mauriņš. “But, like Candy, one of them injured his left leg.”
