The Papua Journal – I Ngurah Suryawan, Researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in a discussion with the sixth edition of BakuKasTau said that there are two important things that become problems when writing about Papua. This was conveyed via Enauno Coffee Cafe’s live Facebook, Friday (22/12).
“There are a lot of people who write and make studies about Papua, they are already well-versed. Both from abroad, smart people in Jakarta who do research, other Indonesians, and Papuans themselves,” said I Ngurah Suryawan.

The lecturer and anthropologist also said that the problem was; First, whether the language used can be understood by Papuans or not.
“Maybe they “I went to the village but when I wrote it the language was not understood by Papuans in the bureaucracy, let alone those in the villages,” continued the man from Bali.
I Ngura Suryawan also added that the second problem is political decisions and choices in conducting research or studies for certain interests.
“Especially what Papuans, especially activist friends, often accuse of selling Papua for various purposes and this is not only done by people outside Papua but Papuans themselves,” he said again.
The Papua University lecturer also asked whether what they wrote really reflected the situation in Papua?

Seeing the two things above, through his works, I Ngurah Suryawan wants to convey what the Papuan people are struggling with.
“Maybe you don’t have a voice to convey or tell about your life to the public. Not representing, but you know, there is a voice that you have to hear,” stressed the author of the book Papua VS Papua.
For him, the most important thing is why we write and what we write for, meaning there is something we want to convey and what our attitude is when writing. (Nita Aitan)
