Construction norms are respected in Sofia, and I assume throughout the country, the minister said
“Buildings in Bulgaria since 1987 have been calculated in seismic areas, such as Sofia, for the 9th degree, including the old buildings and the panel blocks,” said the acting minister in the program “Why, Mr. Minister?” on bTV of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Shishkov. According to him, the panel blocks in Bulgaria should be able to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude like the one in Turkey.
“In general, buildings in Bulgaria have been calculated for seismic resistance quite a long time ago, so we should not be worried, including about the strength of such an earthquake. The quality of construction is an extremely serious topic and we must constantly talk about this topic,” added the minister.
“The building is put into operation, depending on its category, by the Directorate for National Construction Control (DNSK) or by the municipalities. There is a very serious legal mechanism that, if everyone complies, there should be no problems,” Shishkov added.
“I can say that the norms are really respected in Sofia, I assume that in the whole country as well. The supervision really checks the constructions. Keep in mind that the construction is accepted once by the supervision, a second time by the designer, constructor and a third time by the builder”, he explained the minister.
