The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival unveiled its winners this Saturday evening. The Swedish director wins his second Palme after The Square (2017).
Without filter won the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival this Saturday. Ruben Ostlund’s film succeeds Julia Ducournau, the director of Titanium. This is his second Palme after The Square (2017). Without filter is an acid satire of the ultra-rich and class relations in Western societies.
The Grand Prix, the second most prestigious distinction, was awarded ex-aequo to Frenchwoman Claire Denis for Stars at noon and the Belgian Lukas Dhont, the youngest of the competition, for Close. Finally, the prize for directing was awarded to Decision to Leave by South Korean Park Chan-wook.
“A very long journey to get here”
South Korean actor Song Kang-ho, 55, won the Best Actor award at Cannes on Saturday for his role in The Lucky Stars by Japanese Hirokazu Kore-Eda. Fetish actor of his compatriot Bong Joon-ho, and star of his film ParasitePalme d’Or 2019, he plays in this Kore-eda film a man involved in baby trafficking, who will form a small family of odds and ends around him.

The film War Pony about the intertwined destinies of two boys living on an Amerindian reserve won the Camera d’or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, which rewards a first film in all categories. Presented at Un Certain regard, this first film is signed by Gina Gammel and Riley Kough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley.
Several award-winning films
Several prizes have already been awarded before the ceremony. The Lucky Stars by Japanese Kore-eda, about a mother abandoning her baby, won the Ecumenical Jury Prize. Boy from heaven by Tarik Saleh, immersed in the mysteries of politico-religion in Egypt, was awarded the François Chalais prize, which rewards a film which reflects “the reality of the world as well as possible”.
The parallel selections also announced their winners. The Critics’ Week Grand Prize, dedicated to young talent, was awarded last Wednesday to Colombian Andrès Ramirez Pulido for The pack. The story of young delinquents and criminals to whom an educator tries to give a second chance through group therapy in an abandoned house in the heart of the tropical forest.
Pakistani movie Joyland, the first from this country in the official selection at Cannes, was awarded the “Queer Palm” LGBT award on Friday evening by the jury chaired by French filmmaker Catherine Corsini. A film that deals with repressed homosexuality and addresses the issue of transidentity in Pakistani society.
The “Un Certain Regard” prize, the main parallel section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, centered on “cinema of authorship and discovery”, went to French film on Friday The worst by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret. The film chosen by the jury chaired by Valeria Golino tells of a wild casting in a city of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais). Release scheduled for November 12.
