Today, Sunday 2 July 2023, the Palio di Siena returns, the most important event in the city which takes place every year on 2 July (Palio di Provenzano, in honor of the Madonna di Provenzano) and on 16 August (Palio dell’Assunta, in honor of the Assumption of Mary). In the Palio the different Contrade, or the “zones” into which the city is divided, challenge each other in a horse race in Piazza del Campo. The city of Siena, in fact, is divided into 17 Contrade, easily identifiable thanks to the unique coat of arms and colors: Aquila, Bruco, Chiocciola, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Istrice, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Oca, Onda, Pantera, Selva , Tartuca, Torre, Valdimontone.
