The palace will not be completely renovated until 2028 at the earliest

Only when the Hochschule für Gestaltung moves will the land of the baroque building in Offenbach take over.

Anyone approaching the facade of the Isenburg Palace can at least guess what could be seen there until recently. A few weeks ago the graffiti on the walls and doors of the baroque building on Mainstrasse was removed – but the color was apparently not quite strong enough to completely paint over it. The listed castle belongs to the State of Hesse, but the user of the property is the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) and is therefore also responsible for maintenance.

“A comprehensive complete renovation of the Isenburg Palace is related to its subsequent uses after the HfG Offenbach has been relocated to the planned new building at Offenbacher Hafen,” said Hessian Art and Culture Minister Angela Dorn (Greens) in response to a small request from the FDP. That won’t be until 2028. “That is sobering,” said applicant Oliver Stirböck of the FR. It is understandable, of course, that the state wants to wait with major renovations, but the castle and the grounds are in “no condition that is appropriate for such a building,” emphasized the Liberal.

The state government also announced that the HfG Offenbach received between 8.375 and 9.835 million euros per year in the years 2017 to 2020, “with which, in addition to personnel and other material costs, among other things, energy costs and construction maintenance are to be borne.

When asked whether the state government considered it justifiable that the HfG was solely responsible for the maintenance of the castle, it was said: “So far there has been neither the wish of the universities nor an occasion to abandon this regulation.”
