The pact for the future at the United Nations Assembly: at the centre, the silent pandemic, the climate and young people

ROMA The 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York was a pivotal gathering of global, political and influential leaders, addressing the most pressing challenges facing the world today. For the global health community, this year’s UNGA is especially important as it focuses on pressing issues such as pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and universal health coverage (UHC).

The global health agenda. With health at the heart of the global agenda, the UNGA offers AMREFAfrica’s largest health NGO – and its partners an unparalleled opportunity to mobilize political will, secure financial commitments and foster collaboration. This is a defining moment to shape the future of global health and accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030.

Many of the key messages. The theme that the organization brings to the Assembly is: the Global South is the most affected by climate change, but is under-represented in key decisions. Let’s make sure their voices are heard and their needs are prioritized.” And he also recalls Amref : “Climate disasters push fragile health systems to the limit, especially in the most fragile nations. We need climate finance that recognizes the direct link between health and climate.” The appointment with an event dedicated to this very topic was today.

Antimicrobial resistance. Two events are dedicated to antimicrobial resistance, on 24 and 25 September. As stated Amref “to tackle antimicrobial resistance – what we can call a “silent pandemic” – we need to strengthen communication, education and training using the approach of Healthcare For All. Another event was dedicated to young Africans, on September 20th.

Those present in New York. Amref Health Africa Global Director Githinji Gitahi; Group Director of Partnerships and External Affairs Desta Lakew; Amref Health Innovations CEO Caroline Mbindyo; Director of Population Health and Environment Martin Muchangi and many others.

Amref Heath Africa. It is the largest non-profit health organization in Africa, founded in Nairobi in 1957. In Africa, Amref creates the conditions for a healthy life through health care and training interventions, maternal and child health protection, child protection, access to water and sanitation and support for women’s emancipation. Every year, more than 20 million beneficiaries are reached through active projects in 35 countries south of the Sahara.
