Ever Given shipowners demand $ 100 thousand in compensation and cancellation of the payment of a fine of almost $ 1 billion.
The owners of the container ship Ever Given, which ran aground in the Suez Canal in March and closed shipping for almost a week, blamed the canal administration for the incident and demanded compensation. Reuters.
The owners’ lawyers in court dispute the legality of the vessel’s detention by the Suez Canal administration. The defense argues that the blame for the incident lies with the administration, as it allowed Ever Given to enter the channel in bad weather.
“The records of the ship, presented in the court, showed disagreement between the navigators of the canal administration and their command center on whether to let the ship into the canal,” the newspaper notes.
The container ship was supposed to be accompanied by at least two tugboats, but this did not happen, the lawyers emphasize.
Ever Given owners are demanding $ 100,000 in compensation. At the same time, they want to achieve the abolition of the payment of a fine of almost one billion dollars.
As a reminder, the container ship ran aground and blocked the movement of ships in March. On March 29, he was taken aground, and later it became known that he closed the Suez Canal again.
Earlier, Egypt said that the country loses about $ 14 million per day due to blocking channel by container ship.
