The man, aged 44, who had the balloon, in which a 28-year-old man was killed and another man who was 37 years old was seriously injured, has been charged. Veselin Hristov, who was held on Wednesday, will answer before the court for careless actions – the death of one person and the bodily injury of another person. This was announced by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Sofia.

Hristov was operating the balloon without documents, without permission being issued and in violation of the Civil Aviation Act. About 10 witnesses were interviewed, including the paraglider who landed successfully. Further documents on the matter are pending.
The owner of the balloon is currently in custody for 72 hours, but a request for permanent detention will be filed.
To date, the man has been convicted five times – for theft, road accident and destruction and possession of property, as well as for selling narcotics. The last punishment by the court was imposed on him in 2018, Sofia District Prosecutor Natalia Nikolova said.
The measure of the accused Veselin Hristov will be heard on Sunday. So far, he had given evidence relating to the management of the balloon only. The plane was at an altitude of 200-300 m.
“I cannot tell you about the defendant’s previous criminal records. Hristov only lifts the balloons, everyone can jump with a parachute wherever they want”, explained the man’s defense.
According to Nikolova, the owner of the balloon was not allowed to use the balloon and did not have an instructor’s certificate.
The parachutes met the requirements and belonged to the two men who jumped from the balloon. It has not yet been determined at what height the jump was made, in which the dead man and the injured man were together. The parachutist fell dead without opening his parachute in time.
