The owner of the Al Yala Tower, the Gaza Strip headquarters of several international media outlets whose destruction in an Israeli bombardment has become one of the most iconic images in the campaign of attacks between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, has filed a complaint about the attack with the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In the complaint, the owner, Jawad Mehdi, assured that the May 15 attack that devastated the Jala Tower, which housed the offices of the US news agency Associated Press (AP) and Al Jazeera television, was a “crime of war “, according to the writing of his lawyer Gilles Devers, picked up by the Israeli Channel 13.
Devers, after delivering the complaint, affirmed that Israel cannot demonstrate “any military objective” in that attack. “We heard many times that this tower was destroyed because there was a team or an armed resistance group. This is something that we totally deny after studying the case,” Devers explained.
According to the lawyer, “International law establishes that civil property can only be damaged if it is used for military purposes, and that was not the case.” That is why we are denouncing him in this court today, “he added in the note, which was collected by the official Russian news agency Sputnik.
Israel has claimed that Hamas military intelligence units and weapons development efforts were operating in the building. The destruction resulted in no deaths or injuries to regret because the Israeli Army gave advance notice of the attack.
