The owner of Cinema City will close hundreds of cinemas, tens of thousands of people may lose their jobs

The chain employs around 37,500 people in the US, Britain and Central Europe. In Britain alone, 5,500 jobs are at risk, the BBC news agency wrote. Cineworld cinemas began to reopen in July after surface quarantines.

In the Czech Republic, Cineworld bought the Cinema City chain in 2014. In the Czech Republic, according to the company’s website, it includes “12 multiplexes and one megaplex in seven cities (Prague, Brno, Liberec, Pardubice, Pilsen, Ústí nad Labem, Ostrava)”. Neither the agencies nor the company informed about the restrictions on operations in the Czech Republic.

The producers of the James Bond film It’s No Time to Die on Friday announced another several-month postponement of the premiere. It is newly planned until the beginning of April next year. The film was originally scheduled to start screening this April, due to the covidu-19 pandemic, but the spring was postponed to November. The postponement of prime ministers and the rise of new coronavirus infections are dashing the industry’s hopes for recovery.

According to The Sunday Times, Cineworld, whose shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange, wrote to the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Minister of Culture Oliver Dowden. She warned them that the industry was losing economic control.

Giant loss

The company warned its investors on September 24 that if it is forced to close cinemas again, it will probably need additional funding. In the first half of the year, Cineworld reported a loss of $ 1.64 billion (almost CZK 38 billion). The company’s shares have depreciated 82 percent since the beginning of the year.

Viewers returned to theaters for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which was supposed to be a test of how the audience will behave during the release of restrictions at the end of August, said Cineworld. However, the postponement of the premieres – in addition to the new Bond film, viewers will later see, for example, the film Black Widow, starring the superhero Scarlett Johansson – discourages the audience from visiting the cinema.
