The ÖVP’s Proposal to Enshrine Cash in the Constitution: A Trap or a Strategic Move?

Innsbruck (OTS) The ÖVP has set its summer theme with “cash in the constitution”. Bravo! The self-proclaimed European party accepts that the ÖVP is opposing the EU. Doesn’t matter. But now she could fall into the trap of the FPÖ.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer and his ÖVP team won’t give up. They continue to promote the strategy department’s proposal to enshrine cash in the constitution. “One hears again and again that cash should be abolished. As chancellor, I tell you that it won’t play like that in Austria.” Even if the chancellor isn’t on first name terms with us, he addresses us like that in the video. Nehammer wants to appear close to the people. Regardless, we want to generously overlook this petitesse. But what about the content of his claim?
The head of the representation of the EU Commission in Austria, Martin Selmayr, dismantled Nehammer’s initiative with dry words. He clarifies, explains the lack of relevance. Because cash is already protected as “legal tender” under EU law. So a mock debate. By the way – Selmayr is not a bad leftist. The CDU man is a proven expert. The trained lawyer used to work for the European Central Bank, earned his doctorate with distinction on the subject of “Communitarianism of the currency” and was Secretary General of the European Commission.
But Selmayr’s rebuke rolls off Nehammer. His team believes the topic gets under the skin of the citizens. So it will continue to be “played”, as they say in politics. It also distracts from high inflation, high rents and incriminating allegations of corruption.
And then there is one more consideration to all of this. Long before Nehammer, FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl acted as the cash savior. And because the pre-election campaign has already begun, the ÖVP wants to dig the water out of the blue, open the door to the ÖVP for the FPÖ supporters – and curry favor with the FPÖ.
This could be dangerous for the ÖVP. Many Austrians have long since seen through the cheap intention. Your everyday problems are completely different. And then there is the FPÖ, which is in the process of setting up a trap for the Chancellor’s Party. She not only accuses the ÖVP of “mere plagiarism”. FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl is driving the chancellor party, asking them to quickly convene a joint special session on cash. If the ÖVP gives in, it will have a problem in the coalition. In any case, Kickl shifts up the gear. He has already called for the referendum. Kickl laughs: Either the ÖVP forms a cash alliance with the FPÖ, then this is Kickl’s success. If Nehammer pinches, he has lost the rest of his credibility. Enjoy Kickls.
