The overloaded Christmas network is a thing of the past, people want more through social networks

During December 24, O2 customers made almost 13.943 million calls, sent 12.196 million SMS messages and 393,000 MMS messages. The number of calls decreased by four percent compared to last year, the number of sent SMS by 13 percent, O2 spokeswoman Kateřina Mikšovská told ČTK. The busiest time for calling and sending SMS was traditionally in the morning from 10:00 to 11:00.

On the contrary, the number of Christmas cards that people send via social networks, messengers or e-mails increases every year. On this year’s Christmas Day, a new Christmas record in the volume of transferred data was set in the O2 network. “The biggest record holder is the WhatsApp application, which had a year-on-year increase in the volume of transferred data of 70 percent. Data traffic on Christmas Day increased by 31 percent compared to last year to 2143 TB, “said Mikšovská.

The T-Mobile operator recorded 15.6 million calls and 10.716 million text messages in its network on Christmas Day. Compared to the previous year, the number of calls decreased by 6.4 percent, the number of sent SMS by 21 percent. The number of sent multimedia messages, which was 301,000 this year, is also declining, which is 18 percent less than last year. Data consumption in the T-Mobile network increased by 15 percent, added company spokeswoman Zuzana Svobodová.

Social networks are experiencing two significant peaks on December 24, the first in the morning, which culminates shortly after noon, and the second around 21:00. Between 17:00 and 20:00, data traffic on social networks decreases significantly. People put down their phones, sit down for Christmas dinner, or move to a tree. Only then does she return to social networks, Mikšovská said.

Vodafone’s network connected almost 12 million calls and transmitted more than seven million SMS during this year’s Christmas Day. The volume of voice calls fell by 12 percent compared to last year, which indicates a shorter average call length than last year, said Charlota Dědková from the company’s press department.

The use of Vodafone’s data services increased by 34 percent compared to last year, which, according to her, confirms the trend of recent years. The largest data traffic was between 21:00 and 22:00. Although people are increasingly using Internet communication, as evidenced by the declining number of sent SMS, the number of sent MMS messages was three times higher than the average working day. Of the foreigners in the Czech Republic, most visitors from Sweden used the Vodafone network.
