The outbreak of avian flu sets off the alarms for contagion in Latin America

In January of this year, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned of the increasing detection of foci of avian influenza in birds from ten countries in the region. PAHO expressed concern about a case of human infection in the region registered in Ecuador.

The virus was first detected on the continent in December 2014, in North America. Since then and until now, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Argentina and Venezuela have registered outbreaks of the disease.

The biggest concern of experts at this time is the presence of the virus in mammals. Although the World Health Organization has assessed the risk to humans as low, specialists are concerned that the virus will continue to mutate and adapt during outbreaks.
