The Ottawa Hospital presented the first drafts of its future Civic campus to municipal officials in the federal capital Tuesday morning, a project to improve the care provided in this establishment, according to its president and CEO, Cameron Love.

Touching testimony

Severely injured in Afghanistan in 2009, Bushra Saeed-Khan made a point of addressing the City’s Finance Committee on Tuesday to offer her support for the new Civic campus project. She believes that she and her relatives would have benefited from the improvements made to the hospital as part of her long rehabilitation after the explosion which caused her serious injuries during a routine patrol in Kandahar.

“What we did learn during my stay, however, is how old the facilities are. I received the best care I could hope for from dedicated professionals, but the conditions in which they have to work are difficult, ”said Ms. Saeed-Khan.

The latter, for example, underlined his arrival by helicopter from a hospital in Germany to the heliport located on the other side of Carling Avenue, which requires an additional transfer by ambulance on a busy artery. Helicopters transporting patients to the Ottawa Hospital will be able to land directly on the roof of the future building.

The federal official also stressed the importance of single rooms for all patients, a measure Cameron Love touted as essential in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases.

“I remember the weeks when my post-traumatic stress was at its most extreme and night terrors made me wake up screaming. I still feel so bad that I woke up my roommates so intensely, especially since they were also trying to recover, ”said Bushra Saeed-Khan.

“My mom was able to stay with me on the nights I needed her the most, it was exhausting for her. The new campus will allow relatives of patients to stay and rest. I cannot express to you how much that would have made a difference for my mother, ”added Ms. Saeed-Khan.

Construction of the multi-level parking lot is to begin next year. Work for the first phase of the project should be launched in 2024, which would allow an official opening in 2028.
