In his latest clip, Donald Glover, alias Childish Gambino, paints a racist America with a flamethrower.
Three words, “This is America,” followed by a gospel chorus. The music undulates – a possible summer hit. Then very quickly, the attention is diverted by the artist, who appears in the background: shirtless, pleated pants, chains and bushy beard. It’s Childish Gambino, or Donald Glover for those who knew him as a sweet single in Community, from Earn in his own series, Atlanta, or Lando Calrissian in the future Star Wars de Ron Howard.
Donald’s America
But for some Internet users who do not see his work today, Donald Glover will probably remain the protagonist and rapper of “This is America”, a powerful, deliberately violent video. Because after barely a few seconds of introduction, the warm voices are interrupted by a gunshot: the artist has shot his guitarist, and chaos is about to break out: in the background file leaks and riots, police cars, and even a horseman of the apocalypse, while Childish Gambino follows popular American dance steps and nonchalant executions. The most chilling of all? That of the choir in question, in a burst of automatic rifle, like a bloody reminder of the killing in a Methodist church by a white supremacist, in 2015.

Because behind this rich staging and an achievement that we owe to Hiro Murai – regularly behind the camera ofAtlanta -, it is the American racist violence that Donald Glover makes howl in this traumatic clip of contrasts. Deaths, black, everywhere: by bullet, by arrest, by indifference. Because through a brilliant performance, he also condenses the aggressive passivity of a society that sees dramas on its mobile phones as so many nonsense swept away by everyday life and its distractions. Heavy with innuendo and symbols, the video freezes as much as it captivates. And, ultimately, reaps the admiration of her already-fans and her peers, such as Janelle Monáe.
Bye Childish, forever Glover
Donald Glover is not lacking in talent: musician, rapper, DJ, actor, director, producer, and even comedian who left his mark once again last weekend in “SNL”, with a sketch who shamelessly tackles the megalomaniac outings of Kanye West.

He’s also the first black person to win Best Comedy Directing at the Emmy Awards, while last year he took home a Grammy for the hit ‘Redbone’. The track was part of his acclaimed latest album, Awaken, My Love !. And “This is America” sounds the alarm: even if it introduces what should be Childish Gambino’s last opus, Donald Glover has come to stay – especially in the memories of “his” America.
