Jakarta –
The Doma tribe, also known as the Vadoma tribe in Zimbabwe, Africa, is often nicknamed the ‘ostrich man’ because of their strange feet. This condition is known as ectrodactyly.
Ectrodactyly is also known as bipedal syndrome or lobster claw syndrome. This syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects the growth of the legs and causes them to look similar to those of an ostrich.
It is believed that the rare mutation occurs in about one in every four children born to the Vadoma tribe. Most members of the Doma tribe lose their three middle toes and only have two outer toes, which then turn crooked.

This rare disorder is caused by an autosomal dominant condition caused by a single mutation on chromosome 7.
Interestingly, members of the Doma tribe consider that a hereditary disorder in their feet is not a disability. They are even proud of their identity and consider this mutation as a status better than other tribes in the Kayemba region, Zimbabwe.
Due to the ‘odd’ shape of their toes, they couldn’t wear shoes, but they were able to run even when they had a hard time. They can also climb trees despite only having two toes.
Even though they have physical disabilities and limitations, this is not an obstacle for them to be active and remain active in hunting, fishing and gathering food.
In addition, Vadoma Residents are not allowed to marry outside their group. Quoted from Daily Star, this aims to prevent the spread of these conditions in other tribes. Because of this rule, the Vadoma tribe has a history of incest or inbreeding.
This results in an accumulation of diversified genes, eventually leading to the appearance of physical defects or rare genetic conditions.
