The Oscars will be held for the first time in two places at once

This year, the most nominations have the film Mank, which is applying for ten golden statuettes, including the one for the best film. The film Chicago Tribunal has seven nominations. Other contenders for Best Picture are Hopeful Young Woman, Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Father, Sound of Metal and The Land of Nomads. According to most critics, the latter film is a favorite for winning a golden statuette for the best film, as it prevailed at the BAFTA awards, at the Golden Globes and also won the main prize from the American Producers’ Association (PGA).

If the Land of Nomads won in the most watched category, it would mean that the Oscar for the best film once again escaped the streaming and production company Netflix, from whose stable comes, for example, Mank or the Chicago Tribunal. Her films have the highest total number of nominations for the second year in a row, this year they have collected 35.

90% of the nominated actors are from minorities

This year brought the contestants with the most diverse origins in the history of the Oscars. Nine out of ten actors and actresses nominated for best performance in supporting and starring roles went to ethnic minority representatives. Two black women are vying for the Best Actress award, which was the last time 50 years ago. For the first time, two men of Asian descent are vying for the best actor. And two women are also fighting to win the statuette for the best director. In addition, the director of the Land of Nomads, Chloé Zhao, is the first non-white woman to be nominated in a prestigious category. Many media consider her a favorite.

It remains relatively unclear for the time being what the ceremony itself will look like under the coronavirus restrictions. Its producers have previously stated that they want to maintain the appearance of a sumptuous gala evening, although not as many people take part in the event as usual. However, all guests were informed in advance that it would not be possible to speak remotely at the gala evening via the Zoom application. It was the problems with remote entry that accompanied, for example, the awarding of the Golden Globes and caused quite embarrassing moments.

The gala evening will not have a main moderator for the third year in a row, the individual categories will present various groups of celebrities instead. According to the producers, the whole show will work directly with the covidu-19 pandemic and its devastating effects on the film industry. Veils will allegedly be a significant motif. The ceremony will take place for the first time in two locations, the classical in the Hollywood Dolby Theater, and then in the Union Station in Los Angeles.

Despite the efforts of the producers, the media expect that this year will be accompanied by a record low audience, which was also faced by other film awards of this season. The Oscars used to be watched by 35 to 45 million viewers, and they were just behind the Super Bowl, the final of the Overseas Football League (NFL), which is traditionally America’s largest television event.

Last year, however, the number of Oscars fell by 20 percent year on year, which was before the start of the covidu-19 pandemic. The attendance of this year’s Golden Globes, which took place in a new format compliant with coronavirus restrictions, was 64 percent lower than the year before. A similar drop was also recorded by the Grammy Music Awards, which had the lowest viewership so far this year, falling by 51 percent year on year.
