The Oscars are committed to an inclusive cinema with new norms – The GO!

The Hollywood Academy From 2024, it will impose new standards that will require the films that are candidates for the best film to comply with minimum inclusion requirements. With these new rules, the Oscars are committed to an inclusive cinema.

Changes in sight: the Oscars bet on inclusive cinema

The Oscars have announced their new bet for their next editions: an inclusive cinema, with films that must meet innovative requirements. The new standards proposed by the Academy will not be applied until 2024, although they will be considered from 2022. For the imminent edition it will not have to be updated to these standards because many of the films are already released.

Among the proposed requirements, it is worth highlighting that at least one of the protagonists is representative of a minority, or let him be 30% both of secondary cast as from technical team.

The introduction of these new rules comes at a time when the US is mired in numerous racial protests. The Academy has also received criticism in previous years for the lack of diversity.

The new inclusion standards

For the next two editions, the productions must submit a file that highlights the requirements they meet. From the Academy it has been agreed that the aspiring films for best film must meet at least two of the four standards, which are: Representation on screen, in a creative team, opportunities for access to the industry and promotion of audiences.

  • 30% of the secondary cast, underrepresented groups. (Women, minority ethnic group, LGTBI + people, People with physical, cognitive or hearing disabilities).
  • Argument centered on the history of some of these groups

2. Separate from the creative team

  • Two of the creative direction positions must be from underrepresented groups
  • That they are part of six lower positions. (Asian, Latino, Hispanic, Black, African American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Near Eastern Native, Hawaiian).
  • 30% of the team is from one of the previous groups

3. Access and promotion opportunities

  • Are part of a racial minority
  • (Asian, Latino, Hispanic, Black, African American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Near Eastern Native, Hawaiian)
  • They are part of groups underrepresented on screen (Women, minority ethnic group, LGTBI + people, People with physical, cognitive or hearing disabilities )
