The Oscar ceremony could be postponed next year

It is currently planned that the Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Oscars, which is the largest public event of the film industry, will take place on February 28.

However, the academy has already been forced to make significant changes to the competition rules due to the closure of cinemas due to Covid-19, delays in the release of new blockbusters and the suspension of producers.

One of the many anonymous news sources told Variety that the postponement of the ceremony itself was “expected”.

However, no formal proposals have been made or detailed discussions have taken place on the postponement of this event or potential new dates.

In April, the Academy of Cinematography and Science relaxed the rules of the competition by removing indefinitely the requirement for films to be shown in cinemas in order to be eligible for the Oscars.

Films must be screened at Los Angeles cinemas for at least seven days to qualify for the Oscars under normal circumstances, but cinemas in the second largest city in the United States have been closed since mid-March due to Covid-19.

The Academy also warned that other changes to the rules for running for the Oscars may be needed.

In recent years, there has been a heated debate about films made by streaming companies such as Netflix that have also been nominated for Oscars, including last year’s The Irishman and the 2018 Rome. In order to qualify for the Oscars, these films were first shown in cinemas for a short time, but then offered on the web.
