The Orionid Meteor Shower: Peak Dates, Viewing Conditions, and Spectacular Displays

SUARAMERDEKA.COM-The Orionid Meteor Shower is a space phenomenon that occurs every year between September 26 and November 22.

Reporting from space.com, the active Orionid meteor shower occurs between September 26 and November 22.

And it will reach its peak on October 20-21, with an estimated clear sky speed of around 20 meteors per hour.

Orionid viewing conditions won’t be too bad this year as the moon will be 37% illuminated at its peak.

Sometimes the Orionid meteor shower produces spectacular displays of up to 80 meteors per hour.

But in recent years the Orionid meteor shower produces a more modest display, namely about 20 or 30 meteors visible per hour.

The Orionid meteor shower occurs when the Earth passes through debris or ice and dust left over from Comet 1P/Halley or better known as Halley’s Comet.

The Orionids can be seen by skywatchers in both the northern and southern hemispheres (weather permitting, of course).

The name meteor shower is taken from the constellation where the meteors appear, known as the radiation.

From Earth’s perspective, the Orionid meteor shower appears to come roughly from the direction of the constellation Orion.

The best time to watch the Orionid meteor shower is between midnight and dawn, when the shower’s radiant, the constellation Orion, is high in the sky.***
