The previous record was set more than 50 years ago by the Apollo 13 mission, which covered a distance of 248,655 miles.
There are no humans aboard the Orion capsule, as astronauts are not expected to join until the Artemis 2 mission begins in 2024.
Just before setting the record on Saturday, the Orion capsule entered lunar orbit.
