The Origin of Pertamax, Pertalite to Premium BBM

Jakarta

Pertamax fuel prices at all Pertamina gas stations have been adjusted to Rp 12,500/liter, and in some areas Rp 13,000/liter. The price increase made by PT Pertamina (Persero) adjusts to the increase in world crude oil prices.

Already know the origin of Pertamax BBM?

Citing Pertamina’s official website, Pertamax was first launched on December 10, 1999. The birth of Pertamax replaced the existence of Premix (1994) and Super TT (1998) which contain elements of Methyl Tertra Butyl Ether (MTBE) which are less environmentally friendly.

Pertamax is a gasoline fuel with a minimum octane level of 92 with international standards. Vehicles that are highly recommended to use Pertamax are those with a compression ratio of 10:1 to 11:1, or gasoline-fueled vehicles that use technology equivalent to Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).

With ecosave technology, Pertamax is claimed to be able to clean the inside of the machine (detergency).

Pertamax is also equipped with anti-rust protection on the walls of the vehicle tank, fuel line and engine combustion chamber (corrotion inhibitor), and is said to be able to maintain the purity of the fuel from the water mixture so that combustion becomes more complete (demulsifier).

In line with the increase in the price of Pertamax, the government decided that Pertalite or RON 90 BBM would be a type of Special Assignment Fuel (JBKP), aka subsidized fuel. In short, Pertalite’s status will be like Premium whose distribution is regulated in the assignment area and in its distribution Pertamina will be given compensation.

BBM Pertalite itself was born in 2015. The news of its launch has been widely heard since April of that year. Initially, it was explained by Ahmad Bambang, who at that time served as Marketing Director of Pertamina, Ahmad Bambang, that Pertalite was planned to be launched in May.

He conveyed this in his presentation on the plan to launch a new product, during a meeting with Commission VII DPR, at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, April 22, 2015.

Pertamina then canceled the sale of Pertalite in May 2015. The cancellation was related to the government’s stance on the price of Pertalite which is more expensive than Premium gasoline.

SOE Minister Rini Soemarno at that time explained that she and the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources had agreed that Pertamina should review the launch of Pertalite gasoline. The reason is that Pertamina cannot stop selling or producing Premium gasoline if the price of Pertalite is still above Premium.

“Please introduce Pertalite but if Pertalite is more expensive then Premium must still be available,” Rini said during a conversation at the Ministry of SOEs, Jakarta on May 7, 2015.

Rini explained that the government does not want to burden the community by removing Premium, but the price of new fuel as a substitute is much more expensive.
Dwi Soetjipto, who at that time served as President Director of Pertamina, stated that his party had to prepare a series of product tests.

Finally, Pertalite was officially launched for the first time on July 24 2015, at gas station 31.1.02.02 Abdul Muis, Central Jakarta. At that time, fuel with RON 90 was available at 110 gas stations in the cities of Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya.

Initially, Pertamina only conducted a market test behind the launch of Pertalite to find out consumer responses to its new product. If consumers give a positive enough response, Pertamina will take the next steps. In the end Pertalite managed to survive until now.
