The Origin of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Name: Ronald Reagan and the Strong Inspiration Behind It

Everyone knows his name – the cult soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo (38) enjoys worldwide fame. The Portuguese international has, among other things, been named world footballer of the year five times. Known to most fans by the abbreviation CR7, the sports star’s full name is actually Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. Now Cristiano reveals where his name comes from and what a former US president has to do with it.

In an interview with GQ, he explains that his parents named him after another celebrity: Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States. However, this decision probably had less to do with his political career. Ronald was Cristiano’s father’s favorite actor, and so his parents took inspiration when naming their son. “They thought it sounded strong,” explains the 38-year-old.

Will Cristiano follow the example of his prominent namesake and also retrain as a politician in the future? Giving up football doesn’t seem to be an option for the striker at the moment. Only at the beginning of the year did his move to the Saudi Arabian football club Al-Nassr attract a lot of attention.
