According to the organizers, the celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Saturday attracted more than 500,000 visitors. The historical events of 1989 and the feeling of limitless freedom were “impressively celebrated” by people at various events and activities, explained the state-owned Kulturprojekte GmbH. Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) was convinced that the anniversary day would remain in special memory.
Berlin commemorated the fall of the Berlin Wall with, among other things, a four-kilometer-long open-air installation made up of 5,000 posters along the former border. The posters, which had already been on display since Friday, were designed by children and adults under the motto “We uphold freedom”. Replicas of banners that GDR citizens carried during demonstrations in the autumn of 1989 were also on display.
