The Order of the Layers of the Earth’s Atmosphere from Bottom to Top

KOMPAS.com – The atmosphere is the layer that surrounds the Earth. Formed from layers of gas that are thousands of kilometers from the surface of the Earth.

It is estimated that the thickness of this layer reaches 500 kilometers. One of the supporting gases in the atmosphere are carbon dioxide and helium.

Illustration of the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. The lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere. While the top layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the exosphere.

Reporting from the website of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud), the order of the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere starts from the troposphere to the exosphere.

The lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere. While the top layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the exosphere.

Here’s a more complete explanation:

Quoted from the NOAA website, the troposphere is the lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. Almost all weather events occur in this region.

The troposphere begins at the surface of the Earth. The height also varies, some are 18 to 20 kilometers, and some are 6 kilometers.

Located above the troposphere, the stratosphere is cold and only occupied by ozone. Its main function is to protect against ultraviolet radiation.

This layer holds about 19 percent of the atmosphere’s gases and a small amount of water vapor. Its altitude is 6 to 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The order of the next layer of the atmosphere is the mesosphere.

On the NASA Climate website, it is explained that the mesosphere layer is at an altitude of 50 to 80 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

This layer is colder than the stratosphere because of its higher position. The average temperature is estimated at -85º Celsius.

The next layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the thermosphere.

The position of this layer is higher than the mesosphere. It is estimated that its altitude ranges from 80 to 700 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The thermosphere is the layer where the aurora borealis and australis often occur. Even space stations frequently orbit in this layer.

The exosphere is the uppermost layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Located at an altitude of about 700 to 10 thousand kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

In this layer, many atoms and molecules are released into space, and satellites orbit the Earth.
