The opening speech spearheaded by actors Steve Martin and Chris Rock led the 92nd edition of the Oscars not only to criticize the lack of diversity but also the irony and sarcasm inherent in it.
Martin and Rock took the stage after Janelle Monae’s initial musical moment and Billy Porter and they denounced the lack of women in the category of Best Achievement and also of black nominees, the two flaws most pointed out by critics.
The initial jokes gave rise to the question of Martin: “What remains in the Best Achievement category? “To which, Steve replies,” Vaginas? “The response led to applause from the audience in reaction.
From the criticism for the lack of women in the Best Achievement category to the racial issue,
Martin and Rock praised Cynthia Erivo – the only black nominee – for her interpretation as Harriet Tubmanl, a slave who escaped and subsequently rescued about 70 slave people, including family and friends, hiding them.
“
Cynthia Erivo did such a good job of hiding black people in Harriet that the Academy chose her to hide all black nominees! “Shot Chris Rock before yelling, “Eddie [Murphy]I loved it in Dolemite! “.
Following criticism, Martin pointed out that in 1929 there were no actors nominated for the Oscars. Rock replies sarcastically, “Yes, and in 2020 we have one”.
Steve Martin: “Think how much the Oscars have changed in the past 92 years … back in 1929, there were no black acting nominees.”
Chris Rock: “And now in 2020, we got one.” https://t.co/NJ7Y0X0Wco #Oscars pic.twitter.com/R3vfruEEvn
