The Opening of the High School with International Sections in Vincennes Delayed Until 2024 due to Soil Depollution and Safety Concerns

High School Opening in Vincennes Postponed Due to Depollution Concerns

The highly anticipated opening of the high school with international sections in Vincennes, Val-de-Marne, has been postponed. In a joint press release signed by the Île-de-France region, the town hall of Vincennes, and the rectorate of the Créteil academy, it was announced that the school will now open in September 2024.

The decision to postpone the opening was made as a precautionary measure to conduct additional studies on soil depollution. The signatories expressed the need to ensure the health and safety of the future students and staff of the school. The new high school is being built on plots with an industrial history, specifically the old industrial city Jarry.

Since the start of the construction site, depollution work, including an excavation 1.5 meters deep, has been carried out to guarantee the health safety conditions for the future users of the establishment. An initial study conducted in 2022 concluded that the land was compatible with the high school project. However, a new control operation on residual pollution was launched this year to further strengthen the site’s health security conditions. The results of this operation will not be known until the first half of July, making it impossible to validate the opening of the school just days before the assignment of high school students.

The decision to build the new high school on a former industrial zone has raised concerns among some. The Snes-FSU Créteil union questions whether the floor of the future establishment presents a health hazard for future staff and students.

Charlotte Libert-Albanel, the mayor of Vincennes, emphasized the principle of precaution and responsibility in making difficult decisions. She stated that health security is not negotiable and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the postponement.

To ensure that each high school student can complete their 2023-2024 school year in the best conditions, alternative solutions have been found. The pupils already admitted to the international section will join the Hector-Berlioz high school, which will welcome all pupils residing in Vincennes. This temporary arrangement will decongest the corridors of Berlioz for another year. Students residing in Saint-Mandé will be divided between the Berlioz and Robert-Schuman high schools in Charenton-le-Pont, while those living in Montreuil will join the Jean-Jaurès high school or the Condorcet high school. Students from Fontenay-sous-Bois will be assigned to the Pablo-Picasso high school in the same city.

The staff appointed to the new Vincennes high school will keep their final assignment and will be offered temporary positions for the 2023-2024 school year after consultation.

Despite the disappointment caused by the postponement, the priority remains the health and safety of the students and staff. The additional studies on soil depollution will ensure that the high school with international sections in Vincennes opens in September 2024 with all the necessary guarantees of health security.

The decision to postpone the opening of the high school was met with disappointment from the local community, as many had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new educational institution. However, the authorities emphasized the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of the students and staff.

In the meantime, the relevant authorities will continue to work diligently to ensure that the necessary depollution measures are implemented to meet the required safety standards. This includes ongoing soil testing and remediation efforts to address any residual contamination.

The high school with international sections in Vincennes aims to provide students with an exceptional education that combines rigorous academic standards with a global perspective.
