If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? And if Netflix releases a series or movie and we don’t have data on its audience, has anyone seen it? The one in the forest sounds when it falls, whether we hear it or not, but how much noise each Netflix tree makes is impossible for us to know with certainty.
The premiere in Spanish cinemas of The Snow Society (on Netflix starting January 4) has been bigger than any other of a Spanish film on the platform in our country: 110 theaters have screened the creature from Bayonne. But we don’t know how many people have seen it because Netflix has banned its box office data. It is not new. As it has been doing since its inception, the Red Ene platform is opaque because this lack of transparency has protected its interests.
This was recognized by Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of the company, last week in the presentation of a report on what and how much has been seen on the platform – limited to productions with more than 50,000 hours viewed – during the first half of 2023. A squint. the door unprecedented, and still, insufficient. Their data remains unaudited by external companies except in rare cases in which advertising comes into play and they are global figures, there is no data by country.
That this strategy is beneficial for the interests of the platform does not mean that it is necessarily beneficial for its series and films, and, of course, it harms the industry, and by extension the creators and workers in the sector. It also does a disservice to the press, which limits itself to being a loudspeaker for the data published by the company itself and demanding clarity in this fog society.
