Today marks the premiere of new flexible smartphones from Oppo and OnePlus. Their joint child is a book-shaped jigsaw that will be available in China as the Oppo Find N3, but will be released to the rest of the world as the OnePlus Open. Oppo boss Pete Lau revealed in a recent interview that both brands worked on the design of this one, each bringing the best of what they can do – OnePlus is responsible for the hardware design, while Oppo contributed the design and camera technologies. How did their joint creation turn out?
OnePlus Open: a thin and light puzzle
The benchmark for folding books is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, so the OnePlus Open will often be compared to it. And it must be noted that in some paper quantities the Koreans have to bow down to Chinese competition. For example, the OnePlus Open is thinner and lighter – it measures 5.8 mm in the open state, 11.7 mm in the closed state, and weighs 245 grams. Samsung, on the other hand, leads in water resistance – OnePlus does not declare any for its new product.
The crucial component of all jigsaws is the joint, and here the developers took the utmost care. The Flexion Hinge consists of only 69 parts, which is significantly less than the previous Oppo Find N2 model. Thanks to this, OnePlus declares a durability of up to 1 million folds, which no other manufacturer has yet promised. Hopefully, the high durability of the joint will show itself in practice.
OnePlus is not doing badly in terms of displays either. On the outside, the manufacturer installed a 6.31″ screen with a resolution of 1,116 × 2,484 pixels – it consists of a Super Fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED display with an adaptive refresh rate of 10-120 Hz and a maximum brightness of 1,400 nits (up to 2,800 at peak). The display offers accurate color display, it can display the complete DCI-P3 color spectrum.
After opening the phone, a 7.82″ Flexi Fluid display with an aspect ratio of 1.08 to one peeks out at the user, so basically it is a square. In this case too, the manufacturer deployed an AMOLED panel with an adaptive refresh rate, which this time varies between 1-120 Hz. The maximum brightness is the same as in the case of the external display, and its display capabilities are also identical. The only thing missing from perfection is the ability to control the display with a stylus.
OnePlus says the phone is designed from the ground up for multitasking, thanks to the Extended Display feature, which is supposed to support 95 percent of common apps. Up to three applications can be launched on the inner screen at the same time, and their windows can be resized smoothly.
Five eyes with Hasselblad tuning
The dominant feature of the back is clearly the photo module. In the case of the OnePlus Open, it is made up of a large black circle that reminds us of the legendary Lumia 1020 – but in contrast to it, the module contains cameras:
48 Mpx main with optical stabilization and f/1.7 aperture 48 Mpx wide-angle with 114° angle of view, f/2.2 aperture and the ability to focus from 3.5 cm 64 Mpx with 3x optical zoom (up to 120 × digital) and f/2.6 aperture
OnePlus boasts that the special sensor of the main camera (Sony LYTIA-T808) is equipped with double-layer transistor technology, which promises better light sensitivity thanks to a redesigned pixel architecture. As for video, the OnePlus Open can record a maximum of 4K video at 60 fps.
The phone also includes two selfie cameras – the outer one has a resolution of 32 Mpx and an aperture of f/2.4, and the inner one is 20 megapixels with an aperture of f/2.4. The legendary Hasselblad brand has traditionally taken care of tuning all cameras and adding special photographic functions.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and very fast memory
The brain of the OnePlus Open is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is a guarantee of high performance and low consumption. Fast memories like LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0 also provide power, while the phone will be delivered with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The RAM can be virtually expanded by 4, 8 or 12 GB, but the storage is non-expandable.
There is also the legendary sliding profile switch
The battery in the phone has a capacity of 4805 mAh, only classic cable charging is supported, with a power of up to 67 watts. The phone can be charged from 1 to 100 percent in just 42 minutes. The OnePlus Open also boasts stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos certification and full wireless connectivity including 5G, Wi-Fi 7/6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and even an infrared port. The icing on the cake is the sliding profile switch.
Price and availability: significant savings can be made on pre-orders
The OnePlus Open will be available in the European market only in green color and in one memory version with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The price is set at 1,899 euros (about 46,800 crowns), but you can save significantly in pre-orders – just pay 99 euros (about 2,500 crowns) today and pay the rest of the phone between the 20th and 23rd. by October. If you do, you’ll get a €250 discount and a free OnePlus Buds 2 Pro worth €179. The phone itself should be available after November 2nd.
