The oldest tyrannosaurus in North America is discovered

A group of experts revealed the finding of a large tyrannosaur in the area of Alberta, Canada, which was named as “Thanatos Theristes” and which was published in the magazine “Cretaceous Research.”

The fossil, which was found by paleontologists of the University of Calgary and of Royal Tyrrell Museum. With the finding it becomes the oldest tyrannosaurus in North North America and the first new species identified in Canada in the last half century.

This specimen, they say in the study, is 26 feet long and its name means the “reaper of death.” To analyze their parts, they focused on the skull and bones of their jaw.

The specimen was found in 2010 by John and Sandra De Groot, near the city of Hays, southeast of Calgary, Canada.

“It is the oldest finding of a tyrannosaurus in Canada, found in a time window older than the one that occurred before,” said study co-author Darla Zelenitsky, in a statement.

For its part, Jared Voris, author of the study, said that “The fossil specimen is very important to understand the Late Cretaceous period when the tyrannosaurs roamed the Earth.”

Thanatotheristes degrootorum is 79.5 million years old. The group also specified that it is a close relative to two other species of tyrannosaurs: daspletosaurus torosus and daspletosaurus horneri.

“This group had longer and deeper snouts and more teeth in the upper jaws than the tyrannosaurs found in the southern US, which had shorter, bulldog-like faces,” Voris concluded.
