Alfons Pauwels died in Herk-de-Stad on Sunday. At 107 years old, he was the oldest Limburger.
Alfons was born in Herselt on May 8, 1917, but grew up in Tessenderlo. He married Paulien Boeckx, who died in 1969. The couple had four children. Fons met a new partner, Maria Boucquez, but she died in 2018. Fons now lived with a family in Schakkebroek (Herk-de-Stad).

On his 107th birthday on May 8, Fons showed how he could play the clarion. Fons also made the news on his 105th birthday. Then he was invited to enroll at Hartelust primary school in Tessenderlo. The invitation was for children born in 2017, but Fons had also been invited since 1917.

Fons’ funeral will be held on Monday, September 2 at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s Church in Schoot (Tessenderlo). You can pay your last respects to Fons on Saturday, August 31, from 5 to 5:30 pm at the Heselmans funeral home in Tessenderlo. (lw)
