The old Olive Mill in Elefsina is being converted into a Museum – 2024-02-16 02:50:13

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the complex of the Old Olive Oil Mill had come into the ownership of the National Bank and was acquired by the Ministry of Culture, in July 2022, for a price of 5,000,000 euros, in order to install and operate the new Timeless Museum there.

The building of the Old Oil Mill in Elefsina is a space that encapsulates the industrial and cultural history of the city. In 1875, the first factory was founded in Elefsina, the Charilaou Soap Factory. The industrial complex operated until 1960. Since 1995, it has hosted the city’s only cultural festival, Aeschylia, while in 2023, many events were hosted in its premises as part of the European Capital of Culture.

As the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated: “The contribution of the Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou Foundation to the city of Elefsina is lasting and timeless. The Foundation, a valuable supporter of the Ministry of Culture, made a decisive contribution, with a generous donation to the Ministry of Culture, to the project of re-exhibiting the existing Archaeological Museum of Elefsina, which was completed in the spring of 2023. With today’s donation, it establishes the creation of the Timeless Museum city’s. Now, the transformation of the site of the old Olive Oil Mill into a Museum – a commitment of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis – has a clear implementation schedule. The city of Elefsina acquires an Archaeological Timeless Museum worthy of its history and its enormous archaeological wealth. Elefsina is an archaeological site of unique importance and a major landmark of Attica. The Ministry of Culture carries out large-scale archaeological projects in the archaeological project of Elefsina, which exceed 8,000,000 euros. Among them, the possibility of universal access to most of the archaeological site. Hosting the institution of the Cultural Capital, in 2023, resulted in the creation of basic infrastructure in the city, but also a very important artistic program with which Elefsina was reintroduced to the world. The creation of the Timeless Museum offers the city another important cultural pole, contributing to its development perspective.”

The chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Paul and Alexandra Kanellopoulos Foundation”, Nellos Kanellopoulos pointed out: “The thorough, analytical study for the conversion of the building of the Old Olive Mill of Elefsina into a Timeless Museum is the first important step of an initiative of major cultural and historical importance for the city of Elefsina. This is a project that will contribute to its promotion – in Greece and abroad – as a center of continuous inspiration and learning. For this reason, the Board of Directors of the Foundation gladly accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Culture to undertake the financing of the study. On this occasion, we would like to warmly thank the leadership and its responsible executives for the cooperation and the opportunity to contribute to the implementation of this important project”.

For her part, Alexandra Papalexopoulou-Benopoulou, treasurer of the Foundation, said: “The Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou Foundation has always been “present” in the city, through various actions and donations aimed at highlighting the importance of Elefsina as a cultural destination. By financing the preparation of a study for the creation of a new Timeless Museum, as well as the recent re-exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Elefsina, we participate in practice in the preservation of its cultural heritage and the creation of intangible and material infrastructures that will remain a legacy for the future”.
