Swiss dramatist Friedrich Durrenmatt’s play “The Old Lady’s Visit” tells about the events in a small and poor town in Gülen, when billionaire Klara Cahanasyan arrives there. In a story about revenge, poverty, money and responsibility, the protagonist encourages society to make choices.
“If someone hurts you a lot in life, is it worth taking revenge? There are two answers – it’s not worth it, because then you remain the same bad person and don’t increase this good in the world. And the second answer option – it’s necessary. Because – if you don’t punish the bad guys who do bad things to someone else, they’re going to keep doing it,” says lead actress Dana Bjork.
Meanwhile, director Indra Roga notes:
“I create work more about the anonymous power of society. About the fact that each individual person is good, but for some reason, in general, some kind of anonymous intelligence, which we call society, changes all the winds and everything happens differently.”
The production was created by a strong group of professionals – lighting master Oskars Pauliņš, choreographer Inga Raudinga and costume designer Anna Heirihsone. Kārlis Lācis interpreted the ironic and poignant mood of Balkan music in the play: “For the last two years, we have been forced to live in such a farce. Here, that farce is on stage. Looking at the show from any angle, it’s all relevant.”
On the other hand, the walls of the town of Gilena were created according to the idea of set designer Mārtiņš Vilkārš: “It is the sunken fort of the Liepāja Karosta. In a direct way, I thought that the desolation that is in the Liepāja Karosta is very close to this material.”
Along with the actors of the Chekhov Theater Troupe, the actor of the Daile Theater Mārtiņš Upenieks also participated in the performance. The Latvian language teacher played by him is comical to the point of pain: “It’s the first time I have such an experience of playing in Russian. It’s much different, especially because those texts are like no one speaks in everyday life. Such long, extended, poetic, philosophical, elevated sentences. But in the theater the text is not the main thing. There is an action, a character, a relationship conflict that I solve on stage.”
Ojars Rubenis, head of the Union of Theater Workers, was among the visitors of the show: “I am very happy for Indra Roga, who is one of the best stage directors in Latvia, who has gathered a troupe and created good value in this theater. That the whole troupe lives a completely different life together. Together with the music of Kārlis Lāčas and the main character Dan Björk. A very strong ensemble.”
