Ukrainian and Russian media reported that a large explosion occurred around 6:00 local time on the 8th local time on the Krem Bridge connecting the Russian mainland and the Russian-occupied Krm Peninsula in 2014.
Russian news agency TAS, quoting an official from the Krem Railway Corporation, reported that the fuel storage tank in the rear of the freight train is on fire and firefighting operations are underway.
TAS News reported that there was no damage to the structures that were built to allow ships to pass under the bridge, so there was no obstruction to the navigation of the ships, but two-way traffic across the Kreum Bridge is been suspended.
The Krem Railway Corporation separated the burning fuel storage tank from the locomotive and other trains behind it and evacuated it to Kerch station.
After occupying the Krum Peninsula in 2014, Russia opened the 18-kilometer-long Krem Bridge in 2018 connecting the occupied territory with the Russian mainland, which is the longest bridge in Europe.
Ukraine has repeatedly signaled its intention to destroy the Krum Bridge since it was invaded by Russia in February this year, and Russia warned in June this year that it would bomb the Ukrainian capital Kiiu if the Krum Bridge had been attacked.
However, the cause of the fuel storage tank explosion is still unknown.
