The Official Return of Pity Álvarez to Music: ‘Sigue el Rock N’ Roll’ by Gabriel Prajsnar

“Sigue el Rock N’ Roll”, a song by Gabriel Prajsnar that features the participation of Pity Álvarez in his return to music

And one day, we heard the voice of Cristian Gabriel Pity Álvarez Congiu again in a recording. Almost five and a half years have passed since Juanse released his album Stereoma, which included “Mismo Camino”, a duet with the Viejas Locas e Intoxicados factotum that was released two months after his arrest after the murder of Cristian Díaz.

After some photos with Daniel Melingo and Julieta Laso shook social networks along with the news that Pity had recorded again, now the news is the release of a song that features his voice and his rhythmic guitar: it is about “ Rock N’ Roll continues”, a song that previews the album by Gabriel Prajsnar, bassist of the latest Viejas Locas line-up. “The moon passes, the sun passes / the winter passes, so does the heat / Come in friends, rock n’ roll is playing”, Álvarez appears, strong and in the middle, in the second verse of this song that has all the elements of a classic rock and roll.

The song was recorded in mid-November last year at the El Vitreaux stadium, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Floresta, and was released a few days ago through digital platforms. “I composed this song, it is new and it will be included in the album I am recording. When I wrote it, I said: ‘It would be great to do it with Cristian.’ I immediately proposed it to him and the possibility of doing it arose. And I think he turned out great,” summarizes Prajsnar in dialogue with Teleshow.

“When I finished the song I felt that I had to invite him because it represents a lot of things that happen to us as friends, with music as a common denominator, in addition to having a permanent bond of conversations. This: ‘That’s great, old man, there’s nothing better / than counting four and following the drum,’” the musician emphasizes while quoting the chorus in which he shares verses with Pity. “I felt that it was a song that would be good for him because of the style, the form and the way he could sing it.”

Aside from the fact that the song is moving because it is Álvarez’s official reappearance in music, the state of his voice is surprising, as if time had stopped in 2018. In the final result there are no effects, filters or overdubs. “We did it all very quickly, in a single session, it is practically the first take that remained. We wanted it to sound natural and fresh. So it was. He has a very good voice. I gave him a demo of the song when I suggested singing it and he liked it. That’s why he participated, in addition to the vibe we have. We were looking for something authentic and I feel like we achieved it. When we finished recording it, we gave each other a hug,” Gabriel describes.

“He made himself available, he gave me the freedom to handle the issue as I wanted. ‘The song is yours and we go wherever you want,’ he told me. But he did contribute ideas, for example in the solo, which he had thought of differently and suddenly the possibility arose for him to play the guitar. There is a kind of response in the solo, that one plays and the other answers: the one who responds is Pity and the truth is that he did it with a very good style,” he adds when breaking down the details of the song in which he also Other musicians who passed through Viejas Locas participate, such as Matías Mango (keyboards), Hernán González (lead guitar) and Luca Ferrelli (trombone). Also noted in the credits are Miguel Ángel Tallarita (trumpet), Sergio Colombo (sax) and Darío Recúpero (drums). The song, as well as the album that he plans to release by mid-2024, is being produced, edited and mixed by Prajsnar and Alejandro Toche Benvenuto.

“I feel him intact. This is his area, the territory where he feels comfortable. I saw him happy because we had fun. It was something very enjoyable, very beautiful and gratifying to work together in the studio after so long. Pity is a cosmic transmitter, how do I call him. He is a guy who through his lyrics, his style and his way of singing, crosses borders, reaches people in an incredible way… Few people have that, he is an angel who comes with one. And I think this contributes to his recovery, because there is nothing more beautiful and nothing that can do better for him than music, which is his life, what he loves, what he wanted to do all his life and what it does. He is a musician and making music with friends is something very positive, very encouraging,” says Prajsnar when thinking about his partner.

That Pity’s formal return to music has taken place in this framework, close to the underground and far from the big spotlight, has to do with both his history and his legal situation. “I feel very grateful to, in a way, be a channel for this return of his, because surely the time will come when he has a return with all the lights. Time will tell and it will come when it has to be, because it is something that really deserves it. This has to do with my project, which has a lower profile. Maybe Cristian said it in many notes: he considers himself an underground artist,” analyzes Gabriel.

Gabriel Prajsnar was part of Viejas Locas between 2012 and 2018

“For me, being a singer is all new in the sense of making it public. I sang at home or did choirs in Viejas Locas. This came about because I had a lot of songs written for a long time and at some point I intended to record, make an album like the one I’m making now. I don’t consider myself a singer but the point is to put attitude and vibes into it,” says Gabriel (a “lifelong bassist”) about the impulse that led him to prepare this album, in which he also put some guitars.

About his historical link with Pity, he remembers: “We have known each other since 1993. I had my band, which was called Gente Extraña, and he was in the beginnings of Viejas Locas. I remember that we met at a bus stop. We were both waiting for 97 and we started talking and we traveled together, I don’t remember where. We hit it off and made a friendship that, over the years, became the fact of playing together.” Although Prajsnar had been part of the last VL lineup, he also participated in the last Intoxicados show: it was on February 20, 2009, within the framework of Cosquín Rock, with the band already dismembered and the stellar appearance of Skay Beilinson as a guest in “The things that are not touched.”

“For me it was an honor to have been part of Viejas Locas because it is a band that I saw grow, from its beginnings until they recorded their first album (1995). It was very nice to share with an artist like Pity, who I think is one of the best he has given in this country. Being with him, beyond what he generated, implied constant learning. When you have the chance to play with someone like him, if you have your antennas connected you can absorb a lot of cool information. On the other hand, I think Cristian is the artist who keeps rock and roll alive. And he had to put his guitar back on his head to sing rock and roll,” he says.

“The idea is always to take care of Cristian and accompany him. And that at some point, when time permits, he will have the return he deserves. This is what I wish for him as a friend,” Prasjnar closes.

“Neutrónica”, another of the songs that will be part of the album that Gabriel Prajsnar is recording

The complete lyrics of “Sigue el Rock N’ Roll”

Days pass, love passes

The night passes and the pain passes

Life goes by and rock n’ roll continues

The moon passes, the sun passes

Winter passes, so does the heat

Come in friends, rock n’ roll is playing

That’s good, man, there is nothing better

Than count four and follow the drum

The night shines, so does your style

Nobody is going to stop us

Injuries happen, a truck passes

Pass the problem and the solution

Years go by… And rock n’ roll continues

The trains pass, the tremor passes

Planes pass around

Don’t worry, there’s only rock n’ roll here.

That’s good, man, there is nothing better

Than count four and follow the drum

The night shines, so does your style

Nobody is going to stop us

Nobody is going to stop us… nobody is going to stop us!
