OT: The Crossing
Florence Miailhe | FR/DE/CZ 2020 | 84 min | OmU

On April 29 at 6:30 p.m Filmhaus (Spittelbergg. 3) in German version!

The fate of an escape, told in a touching and stirring story. A creatively unique and poetic masterpiece!

As an older woman, Kyone flips through her sketchpad, reminiscing about her childhood, the loss of her parents, and the adventures and perils of her year-long odyssey across countries with her brother Adriel. Using the means of her impressive animation art and inspired by her great-grandparents’ escape from Odessa, the film artist Florence Miailhe tells a touching and biographically colored story.

Behind the film’s simple and therefore seemingly naïve images lies a complex and highly exciting story made up of many biographical memories. The film, which is not limited to any specific event or country, is dedicated to all people who are fleeing. And who, like Kyone in THE ODYSSEY, make their way from a known homeland to an uncertain future.

The film is narrated in the German version by Hanna Schygulla, who, with her calm and melodious voice, creates an almost meditative, contemplative basis for the gripping story about a strong young protagonist, with whom many younger viewers can also identify. The animation technique that Miailhe uses to conjure up such special impressions in the film is that of glass painting.

THE ODYSSEY is an extremely impressive animated film that cleverly offers a sensitive insight into an important and highly topical issue of our time.
