The Mazan rape trial has reignited the debate on chemical submission. Doctor Leila Chaouachi explains the consequences for victims.
Chemical submission is a blind spot for many caregivers. Leila Chaouachi trains health professionals to help them understand the phenomenon. It also gives a list of symptoms, such as black holes, impaired alertness, drowsiness, dizziness, etc. “Chemical submission consists of drugging a person without their knowledge or under threat. The person does not consent to the consumption of the substance with the aim of committing a criminal or misdemeanor act. There are as many possible criminal or misdemeanor acts as ‘assault”explains Doctor Leila Chaouachi, pharmacist at the Paris addiction-vigilance center
“The goal is to make you sleepy or tired to make it easier to take action by lowering your guard and alertness. In these cases, not only sedatives are used, but also stimulants. GHB can cause an overdose, which is extremely serious with MDMA which is included in the composition of ecstasy tablets, the objective is to euphorize and alter behavior and then take action.she adds.
