The OAS can solve the crisis in Venezuela – 2024-08-18 09:43:55

Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State.

USA defended this Tuesday that the Organization of American States (OAS) It should serve as a “vehicle” to resolve the post-electoral crisis of Venezuelawhere the ruling party proclaimed the re-election of the president, Nicolas Madurowith results questioned inside and outside the country.

“It is our hope and our goal: to use the OAS as a vehicle for this.”said the deputy spokesman for the State Department, Vedant Patelat a press conference.

Patel made the statement in reference to a call between Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenand the Colombian foreign minister, Luis Gilberto Murilloin which they differed on the role that the Pan-American organization based in Washington should play in light of what is happening in Venezuela.

Blinken stressed that the region must “speak with one voice, including the Organization of American States,” according to a statement from the State Department; while Murillo reiterated her “position regarding the role of the OAS,” according to a note from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

The governments of Colombia, Brazil y Mexicowhich maintain relations with Maduro, are trying to lead a mediation effort to find a way out of the crisis and on August 1, with their abstention or absence, they caused the Permanent Council of the OAS to fail to approve a resolution that called for verifying the electoral results in Venezuela.

The government of Colombian President, Gustavo Petrothen justified his abstention because the OAS is not “the appropriate scenario” to address the situation in Venezuela given that the Caribbean country has been outside the organization for years.

The United States rejects Maduro’s victory, which was proclaimed by the National Electoral Council (CNE) after the elections of July 28 without having broken down the electoral results.

Washington declares the winner Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiathe standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition, which claims to have the majority of voting records in its possession, which would give its candidate a resounding victory.
