MADRID, 8 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will meet next Wednesday at its headquarters in Washington to discuss the assault by Ecuadorian police and military personnel on the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador last Friday to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.
The session will have as its topic “the violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and its relationship with the figure of asylum, as well as the injuries suffered by Mexican diplomatic personnel in Ecuador,” the OAS has reported. The meeting has been called at the request of the permanent missions to the organization of Colombia and Bolivia.
Glas, prosecuted for corruption, had taken refuge in the Mexican Embassy in Quito and had also received political asylum status, despite which Ecuadorian military and police forces broke into the diplomatic headquarters on Friday night and took the former vice president away. .
Glas is in the maximum security prison La Roca in Guayaquil and the action has been condemned by right-wing and left-wing American governments, as well as by the United States. Mexico has broken diplomatic relations in retaliation, as has Nicaragua, while Bolivia has recalled its Ambassador to Ecuador.Copy to clipboard
